Osun palace set ablaze by arsonists

Seventy-five-year-old Chief Olatidoye Oyedokun and two others were on Monday arraigned before an Osogbo Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly setting ablaze the palace of the Salu of Edunabon, in the Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State.

Oyedokun, Odebode Elijah and Gbenga Olasunbo were said to have committed arson and attempted to kill Oba Kehinde Oladepo.

Appearing before Magistrate R. A. Olayemi, the accused persons pleaded not guilty to the 16 counts preferred against them.

The prosecuting counsel, Inspector Joshua Oladoye, told the court that the accused persons and others at large, on December 19, 2018, at Edunabon, conspired among themselves to commit felony and arson, assault occasioning harm, stealing, indecent assault and attempted murder.

Oladoye added that the accused set the palace of the monarch ablaze, with the intention to kill Oba Oladepo, who was in the palace at the time.

The counsel said the accused persons unlawfully stripped naked Temitope Adeola, Oluwatoyin Oladepo, Ademola Oladepo, Aanuoluwapo Onifade, Tunde Olawoye, Taiwo Ogunsanya, and Temitope Adeola, took their nude pictures and videos, and shared the materials on the social media.

The defence counsel, Bose Dada, pleaded with the court to admit the accused to bail, with a promise to ensure that they attended their trial.

Magistrate Olayemi, however, refused the application and remanded the accused in prison custody till Monday, January 28, 2019, when the matter will come up again. Punch
