In heralding the institution’s 34th Annual General Meeting and Conference, the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) has advocated the use of digital technology to confront challenges in the built environment.
This was revealed by the President of the institution, Dr. Kehinde Osifala, in Lagos.

While stressing that the adoption of technology would enhance engineers’ work and place them in getting global recognition, he said that addressing factors encouraging building failures in the country should be looked into more.
While giving a brief on the panel set by the Lagos State authorities on the recently collapsed Ikoyi building, he said the institution had submitted its findings and awaiting the report and added that COREN would come out with a guidelines that will impact the construction of high-rise buildings to prevent incessant structural collapses in the country
Osifala noted that the conference tagged ‘’ÈKÓ ILÉ …2021,’ beginning in Lagos, will provide a forum for engineers and other stakeholders to share ideas on best practices and proffer solutions to challenges in the sector.
He stressed that NIStructE had contributed immensely towards stemming the tide of building collapses in the country through training, workshops and other advocacy projects.
According to him, the main theme of this conference is ‘’digital technology and its impact on structural engineering practice in Nigeria,’’ and has sub-themes as the built environment and physical infrastructure and the impact of digital technologies, digital engineering tools, digital construction and fabrication application of digital technology in enhancing reliability in design and construction of the building, learning and development in structural engineering in the digital era.
The theme of this year’s conference, the president said, was carefully chosen from contemporary issues in structural engineering arising from the migration of structural engineering practice towards digital technology worldwide. It is a tool for the future.
“The Conference is an annual networking event for structural engineers in Nigeria and it provides a forum for engineers, professionals in the built industry, government officials, local administrative authorities, funding agencies, contractors, suppliers of construction equipment and materials, investors and other stakeholders in the built environment from the public and private sectors to share ideas on best practices and proffer solution to challenges in our sector”, he said.
“It is also a forum for stakeholders to learn from one another and discuss the effective ways of dealing with the present diverse challenges occasioned by the economic situation of the country.
“During the 2021 conference, delegates would have the opportunity to deliberate on issues pertaining to the development of structural engineering in Nigeria, digital technology local and many more.”
