Governor of Enugu State, Peter Mbah, has officially flagged off the construction of the 44.8-kilometer Amah-Eke–Oghe–Iwolo–Olo–Umulokpa Road, spanning the Udi, Ezeagu, and Uzo-Uwani Local Government Areas, with a spur connecting Akama Oghe to Aguobuowa.
This project is aimed at unlocking new economic opportunities across the state.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony in Eke, Udi LGA, on Tuesday, Mbah emphasised that this road project is part of a broader infrastructure push in Enugu West Senatorial District.
He noted that his administration had extended contracts to connect Adani seamlessly to Nsukka, transforming the region’s accessibility.
“What you see here today is an asphalted, well-paved road, but what I envision is a $30 billion economy. I see poverty being eradicated, human welfare improved, and capital development boosted. Good roads do more than ease movement; they ignite economic transformation,” Mbah stated.
The governor assured the public of a swift completion timeline, urging the people to rally behind the government’s efforts.
“Our focus remains on timely delivery and cost efficiency. In three months, we’ll be back here to commission this road. We have zero tolerance for delays, and the contractor is aware. On our end, we’ll ensure the project is fully funded,” he added.
The Special Adviser on Projects Development and Implementation, Uchenna Nwatu, provided more details, confirming the project would include comprehensive erosion control measures, such as embankments, hydraulic structures, and drains.
“The road design includes 1.5-meter shoulders and a 7.3-meter carriageway, both fully asphalted. Drain-to-drain, everything is asphalted to ensure longevity,” Nwatu explained.
Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Gerald Otiji, shared that the road will extend from Orie Engine to Ebenebe at the Anambra border, with an additional spur through Obinaofia Ndiagu to Ugwuoba, creating a key economic corridor.
Local leaders and stakeholders, including the Speaker of the Enugu State House of Assembly, Hon. Uchenna Ugwu; Udi LGA Chairman, Hon. Hyginus Agu; and Igwe Emmanuel Anichebe, Chairman of the Ezeagu Traditional Rulers Council, expressed their appreciation to the governor for his commitment to transformative projects.
“We’re witnessing a new Enugu State under your leadership. Your tenure will leave a remarkable legacy,” Igwe Anichebe praised.
