According to the Lagos State the government, the industries that release the most greenhouse gases (GHGs), which are linked to climate change and seriously endanger the state’s economy and population well-being, are the energy, garbage, and transportation sectors.
In order to combat the growing threat of climate change in the state and take advantage of the opportunities for institutionalising the circular economy as a means of generating jobs and boosting the state’s Gross Domestic Product, Titi Oshodi, the Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE), revealed this and called for collaboration between the Office of Climate Change and Circular Economy (OCCE) and Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA).

During her visit to the LAMATA management, she made this declaration and issued caution, citing the State Climate Action Plan 2020 to 2025 as evidence that over half of Lagos’s 21 million residents reside in informal settlements, rendering them susceptible to the effects of climate change.

The Lagos State Adaptation and Resilience Plan (LCARP) calculated that inactivity on climate change will cost between $22 and $29 billion, this she stated , is eleven times the state’s budget for 2022. These figures and data are concerning. We are on this roadshow in order to involve all relevant parties in containing the threat posed by climate change. In order to boost advocacy and open up opportunities for the development of the circular economy in Lagos through climate action projects, we wish to collaborate with important stakeholders.

The managing director of LAMATA, Mrs. Abimbola Akinajo, stated that the organisation is researching the use of alternative fuels in public transportation and guaranteed that one of LAMATA’s regulatory responsibilities is to encourage the use of multifuel rolling stock in order to lessen the effect of greenhouse gases on fuel used in transportation.
Akinajo clarified that in addition to completing the required steps to be able to quantify emissions, alternative fuel sources are  are being researched for use in public transportation operations include compressed natural gas (CNG), waste-to-fuel, and biogas.
