The Chairman, Education Endowment Fund (EEF) of the North East Development Commission (NEDC), Hajiya Asmau Mohammed last Monday at the inauguration of a two-week training exercise in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital, said 1,800 teachers have been trained to enhance access to quality education in the region.
She said the training organized in collaboration with Limo Holdings Nigeria Ltd is designed to train 300 basic and post basic school teachers.

While revealing that the 1,800 teachers trained under the first phase of the exercise drawn from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states, Mrs Mohammed added that the fund which was created in 2020 to address poor human development indices, high illiteracy rate and high poverty level in the region is aimed at developing sufficient human capital to acquire the adequate capacity for infrastructural and socio-economic development of the North-East region.
“According to the UNDP Human Development Report (2018), the North-East region lags behind other regions in terms of overall Human Capital Development, she said.

“The broad aim of the fund is to develop sufficient human capital to acquire the adequate capacity for infrastructural and socio-economic development of the North-East region.
“To achieve its goals, the fund has set out core areas of intervention in its programme to include training of teachers in the basic education sector, development of the basic education sector by providing infrastructure and learning materials”, Mrs Mohammed added.
She also listed other interventions to include award of scholarships, organising of sports competition, campaign-against drug abuse, psychosocial care for traumatized teachers and students, empowerment programmes and improving the capacity of health workers in the zone.
