The Deputy Director of the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA) yesterday in Kano said that the agency sealed 12 erring industries in Kano for violation of environmental safety standards. He stated this while reviewing progress of the nationwide enforcement exercise embarked by the agency.
Shehu-Usman said the affected industries were sealed for various offences in contravention to the environmental safety standards and regulations. He added that the industries had failed to comply with standard rules inspite of several warnings by the agency, saying that the level of impunity exhibited by some of the industries posed threats to the environment.
“Despite series of abatement notices issued to these industries to operate in an environment friendly manner, they failed to adhere to the rules, he said.
“The trend called for sanction”, he added.
While saying that the agency had embarked on a nationwide enforcement exercise to stem gross negligence to set standards and regulations by the industries and other facilities, Shehu-Usman listed the affected industries to include Tofa Textile Limited, AMCO Plastics, Bin Adam Oil Mills and Full Mark Urja.
Others were Larabee Enterprise; Loquat Classics, God’s Little Tannery, Globus Enterprises, Multitan Limited, GB Tannery, EEC Construction, Brains and Hammers.
He concluded that the affected industries will be charged to court until they show timely commitments towards ensuring effective compliance with the set regulations. He therefore, urged Nigerians to serve as environmental watchdog by reporting facilities that carry out activities detrimental to the environment.
